“It Sucks To Be Me !” Does It Suck To Be You?

Don’t dismiss this because of the title. In fact this will be “meaty” article so close your door and grab a pen and a soda.. Ready? This past weekend my wife and daughter went to see Avenue Q on Broadway. Personally I hate the theatre but my wife wanted to go so there I was prepared to be bored out of my mind.. or possibly just catch up on sleep. Instead I found a great marketing lesson in this play.

The major theme was “It Sucks To Be Me” and while everyone was enjoying the show I was busy thinking of all the lessons in that one simple sentence and putting together in my mind how I wanted to share this important information with you.
My good friend and personal performance guru Lee Milteer says ” You can only CHOOSE to be a vicitim.” and she is really right on target. So let’s dig in here because I have a lot to share.

MY PERSONAL STORY…

I grew up in a household with 2 parents who always seemed to be victims. My dad had a shoe store on a major street in Baltimore ( there were no malls back then). I remember him standing outside the store during the year saying “It’s too hot so they aren’t coming out. It’s too cold. It’s raining. It’s snowing. The economy is bad ( this was back during Jimmy Carter and a major recession). etc etc.”

He always had an excuse of why people weren’t coming into the store but never did anything really proactive to get them in. Same with my mom. She worked closely with my dad and they were always talking ( whining and complaining) about all the disadvantages they had. How hard life was. How difficult it was to make money. How we needed to watch every penney. All sorts of “bad thinking.”

My parents were great parents in every other respect but I wanted to share this with you because it gives you some idea of my backround and the thoughts I grew up with. So no “lucky sperm club or silver spoon for me.” I went thru my 20’s and 30’s with these same thoughts. Anytime something went wrong I first tried to place blame and take the responsibility off my shoulders. Guess that’s human Nature HUH?

BUT THEN I DECIDED NOT TO BE A …. victim anymore and guess what? I became a multi-millionaire. Successful people will continue to succeed during recessions and all sorts of other self inflicted or outside obstacles. WHY? They have chosen to be successful ( PLEASE RE-READ THAT!) In reality — successful people experience the greatest success when others are paralyzed with fear and unable to act. Failure is a choice!

By now I am sure you are thinking that this is really good so far but what are the “action steps” What do I do now ?

It’s ok to fail BUT… you must NEVER EVER say you are a failure.. “IT” failed is ok. Start by putting a plan together to accomplish what you want to achieve. Break it down into steps . Then IMPLEMENT it. GET GOING ! DO SOMETHING ! even if it doesn’t work you are moving forward towards your goal. Not every business I have been involved in has worked out well. But most have and the ones that did produce a nice 7 figure income for me each and every year like clockwork.

THINKG BIG– it’s just as easy. But again you must IMPLEMENT! Just thinking won’t do a thing for you other than frustrate you and make you miserable. Put those blinders on and keep keeping on! This may sound like foofy feel good crap but trust me it is true ! One of my major attributes is that I implement and I am relenetless until I get what I want… I never ever say “It sucks to be” and you shouldn’t either. Noone likes a whiner and complainer. If there is a problem, and you can bet there will always be one, you need to think of solutions BEFORE you whine and complain and tell everyone how “UNFAIR IT IS “ Nothing is fair– get that thru your head and you will succeed. Don’t expect fairness just focus on success and achievment.

ONE MORE BIG IDEA ON THIS TOPIC…

You MUST be very very very careful who you hang around with and associate with. I am sorry to say this even includes family members and friends. Nothing will bring you down faster than being around negative people. You know the ones I am talking about right? The ones who are always telling you “IT SUCKS TO BE ME !” Get rid of them NOW ! IF they are family members than you will need to be a little more delicate and change the subject or just tell them you need to take care of something and leave.

The BOTTOM LINE: here is that if it “Sucks To Be You ” then it is 100% your fault. Do something about it.. Stop whining and pointing fingers. Get a plan together and just do it !
