What Would You Do ? and Some Tools

One of my favorite shows is “EARL” which is a funny look at Karma and how what goes around comes around.
Well this morning I had one of those situations. I went for my regular Dunkin Donuts coffee and I gave the guy a $5.00 bill. He gave me change back for a $20.00.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO ?

Yes ,even during the holiday season with all the bad economic news and everyone feeling it in the pocket ( where it really hurts) I never gave it a second thought.
See to me keeping that money is no different than walking in the store with a gun and helping myself to the cash in his register.
NOW ON TO SOME MORE IMPORTANT INFORMATION
One of the most intriguing ideas/concepts for me is that of persuasion. How to get others to do what you want them to AND still have them feel good about it. I have posted some of the ideas here on the blog so go check them out if you haven’t already. BUt you will be hearing alot more from me on this topic so stay tuned.

AUDIO/VISUALS — see things KINESTHTETICS- need to touch and feel — AUDITORIES need to hear it.
One of the biggest reasons you might not be getting the results you want in your marketing — either off line or on-line is because you are only using one of those methods.
In fact— It is one of the mistakes I am making with this blog.. It is only for visuals.. So in the future I hope to some audios and some videos.

Profit Stimulator #4- Contrast It…

This is an easy one to implement in your business today. Let’s start with an example. Just a few short months ago gas was 4.00 per gallon. Go back to the beginning of the year and gas was around 2.00 plus. Gas is now hovering around 2.80 and everyone is excited.
SO HERE’S THE LESSON– ACTUALLY THERE ARE A FEW SO STAY WITH ME ..
2.80 gas is high compared to gas at 2.00 a gallon but it looks like a great bargain when compared to 4.00 gas. The price hasn’t changed but your frame of reference has. So let’s talk about how to use this concept of contrast in your business.
Step 1. You should have several versions of your product or service. Let’s take a really basic example of a product and then we will talk about how this relates to selling a service. There is a famous catalog company that offers a 3000 dollar coffee maker. It’s only purpose is to sell the 500 dollar one. People see all of the benefits of the 3000 dollar one and then “settle” for the 500 dollar one that has similar features but is a lot less costly.
They never expect to sell the 3000 dollar one. Before we go any further let me let you in on a little secret. There is a segement in any market that will always take the MOST expensive option. They can afford to and they associate high price with high quality and so they “default” to that product so they don’t have to spend any time “thinking” about it. This one secret used properly will instantly increase your business.
Let me give you an example from a service business.. Actually here are 2.
My backround as you know is real-estate and mortgages but this applies to any/every business.
In real-estate the good agents will take you FIRST to the homes they think you won’t buy. You will be shown homes that are more expensive in a neighberhood that are comparable to the cheaper one that has the same features. Or they will show you the “dogs” first so when you are shown “THE” house you can contrast and compare and see what a great value it is.
In the mortgage business I never ever quoted rates and points. I postioned my business so the question never came up — but here is what i said when it did. Let’s say rates were 6.5 with no points and 6 with 3 points. I would simply say “Rates are between 6 and 6.5%” that of course was followed by an explanation of what points were and an illustration of the time needed to recapture them over time with the lower payments.
LET’S TIE THIS ALL TOGETHER SO YOU CAN START USING IT TO MAKE SOME $ OK?
The two big ideas I want you to get from this is.
1. Always have a higher priced version of your product or service. This will help you sell your primary product or service easier AND some people will actually buy your higher priced version giving you more $ per transaction than you are getting right now.
2. Use this contrast principle whenever you are coming up with a promotion so you can increase your sales.
ALMOST FORGOT– you might be asking .. Yeah that’s easy if I am selling a coffee pot but I sell a service. Well the easiest thing to sell is access to you.. The more access to you and your expertise the more you charge. In your town there is an H and R Block and an accountant.
There is a walk- in clinic and a doctor in an office. I could go on and on but I hope by now you get the point.

Just grabbed a coffee at 7-11 and saw a marketing idea that you can use NOW.. Right in the window was a banner for 2 cups of coffee a blue one and a red one.. One had John Mcains
picture on it the other a picture of OBAMA.
I do have a strong opinion here but that’s not the point… What they are doing is brilliant and you can use it too.. See you can vote with your cup. If you like Obama use his cup. If you like Mcain use his.
So they are going to tally the votes based on these cups — But guess what– You can bet on 2 things for sure.
1. They will sell more coffee– this is a cute gimmick and a close race.
2. They will get a TON of FREE/PR for their modest efforts here.
Don’t be surprised if you see the results of their polls in USA TODAY , on the radio and other
media.
Now here’s what you need to do .. Think about how you can use this in your business. What outrageous ideas can use — that are inexpensive that ties you in to the news ( which is what is on everyones mind) that can get you noticed and seen and increase your revenue?

PROFIT STIMULATOR #3- MAKE THEM WAIT

Here’s a profit stimulator you can start using today ..This one creates social proof and positions you as the expert.. It makes people want what you have to offer even more. Here are 3 ways to use it..
FIRST- DON”T ANSWER YOUR PHONE-Now before you flip out and think of all the reasons you simply can’t do that .. Follow me here. Does your doctor answer their own phone? Does your attorney? Think of any expert that you go to ? Any specialist in any field… In fact there are even brick and mortar stores that only see clients by appointment ( conicidentally - they are the ones who charge the highest prices) Do they answer their own phone- The answer is no.
This quickly positions you as an expert in your prospects subconsious. It says you are a busy person who’s time is to be respected. The whole point here is to NEVER COMPETE ON PRICE AND POSITION YOURSELF AS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE FOR YOUR PROSPECTS ISSUES. ( please re-read that !)
Get a receptionist and have her start doing some of that $10.00 an hour work that is keeping you from working “on” your business instead of in it. If you can’t afford that than hire a service to answer your calls. Have them say “Mr/Mrs is busy with clients right now , may I take a message and have them get back to you ?”
TWO- DON”T RUSH OUT TO MEET THEM-Make them wait.
If you provide a service and customers come to your office , please don’t rush out to meet them. Make them wait in your lobby. Have your receptionist offer them coffee. While they are waiting the ONLY reading materials should be “propoganda” you put out.
So if you have written articles, had articles written about you put them out. If you have written a book put that out for them to see. Structure this time they have in your lobby to further position yourself as your prospects obvious solution. You should have a book full of testimonials with your past clients pictures, where they were before they met you and their situation now with specifics of how you helped them.
People will identify with people who are just like them and having similar experiences. Here is a script for your receptionist. ” Mr/Mrs. Is just finishing up with a client. Here are some reading materials while you wait. Can I get you a cup of coffee? I’m sure Mr./Mrs. won’t be much longer.”
THREE- USE THIS IN YOUR ADVERTISING This goes back to the whole conversation I mentioned in a previous profit stimulator about “Scarcity- the less available something or someone is the more people will desire it.”
Here is something I just saw in an infomercial. “Operators are standing by now to take your order. If the lines are busy please keep trying”
This one statement shows social proof- Alot of people all calling so this must be good.. It also creates that scarcity feeling. Gee I better get mine before it’s all gone.
Now that you know how to use it for a product let me show you how to use it for your service /practice.
Let’s say you offer a complimentary consultation. Put a price on that meeting. Then let people know that you only have X spaces available for these each month…
Try this — IT WORKS ! Don’t be scared or feel you will lose business. It will actually bring you more business. Yes- the tire kickers might go somewhere else but who really wants these time wasters anyway. The rest of your clients will percieve you as an expert and the whole price thing goes out the window when you are working with an expert instead of just any other “head of lettuce”

Tired of prospects who just want to “THINK IT OVER?” That response used to frustrate the heck out of me. THey are really saying that you have not given them a sufficient reason to buy NOW…
KEY WORD IS NOW !
When people need to “Think it Over” most likely you will not see them again. Not always– some people are just too analytical.. But if I offered you a ten dollar bill and told you could buy it for 2.00 than I am sure you would take me up on it assuming you believed it was a real deal and I told you why I was making such a deal…
LESSON # 1— review what you are offering and make sure you are providing OBVIOUS value
Your offer needs to be a “no -brainer”
Lesson # 2 - It must be believable… if it sounds too good to be true and you haven’t explained why you are doing it people will simply not believe you … everyone has their SCAM radar on..
NOW HERE IS THE BIGGEST LESSON ON THIS TOPIC

Economic Meltdown- 14 Tips

The year was 1989 and I was just married and trying to make my $600.00 per month rent. All the news talked about each day was the pending savings and loan crisis and a ton of doom and gloom.
At the time I was working for a local savings and loan called Baltimore Federal. Things were ok.. I was doing some business but not really doing too well..
THEN SUDDENLY ONE DAY I WAS… no longer working for Baltimore Federal but instead we were one of the first in the country to be taken over by the government - Resolution Trust Corporation. Needless to say things weren’t great and the government has no clue how to run a mortgage company. Sometimes I have to wonder if they know how to run a government.
THIS WAS THE GREAT SAVINGS AND LOAN CRISIS OF THE LATE 80″s … and I found myself rigth in the middle of it.. Many went to jail.. Most savings and loans went bankrupt and permanently closed.
LIKE DEJAVU ALL OVER AGAIN..
IN the 90’s another crisis with mortgage companies going under in 1994 and many going bankrupt and to jail. Fast forward to our current crisis. The BIG NEWS is that this is a cycle that has repeated itself over and over for the past 3 decades.
LOOSE GUIDELINES- LOW RATES– GREEDY INVESTORS AND BANKS all spell disaster.. This current one is a doozy and I don’t think we have seen the worst of it yet… But from all of these experiences there are a few things I have learned and want to share with you …
I started thinking about all of the things I did to survive and even thrive.. See reality is many will go under and fail but a small few will THRIVE– They will see the opportunities and seize them.
I’m not sure which of those 2 you are but here are 14 things I discovered to help you prosper during this crisis..

1. DON”T STOP MARKETING ….

7. MAKE SURE YOUR MINDSET IS CORRECT……
8. SHARPEN YOUR TOOLS AND ADD NEW ONES TO YOUR TOOLBOX — YOU MUST HAVE MULTIPLE WAYS TO GET NEW BUSINESS
9. STAY AWAY FROM NEGATIVE PEOPLE — AND BECOME “MENTALLY RECESSION PROOF”
10. FIND A MENTOR WHO HAS BEEN THERE….AND LISTEN—THIS IS A BIG SHORT CUT
11. STOP DOING $10.00 an HOUR WORK —- YES EVEN NOW
12. YOU MAY NEED TO FINANCE YOURSELF…. THINK ABOUT THE COST of OPENING A FRANCHISE LIKE SUBWAY — WHERE BEST ONES MAKE 35,000

Your name– can’t do much about that..
Your Awards and titles.. By all means put them on there to credentialize yourself.
Your Photo– You should always include your photo on every marketing piece you put out.
The Stock- I like thicker stock so it feels more substansial. I have even see people send
out their cards in plastic , on a rolodex card with the perferations already cut out. Even got one that was gold plated ( heavy)
In fact, for a short period of time I gave out my card as a disk… I wrote a book called YES YOU CAN GET A MORTGAGE and had the cover put on a cd and the book was on it along with my contact info– ( VERY POWERFUL)
I also had a cd business card business where your card was put on a disk and inside the disk
for a bunch of special reports and calculators … info they wanted …
Regardless of your industry you could copy this idea– these business size disks cost about a buck.. but all you need is one to client to make up for hundreds or thousands of these. They are unique and they get used AND KEPT !!!!
THE BIG THING MOST PEOPLE MISS IS …Actually 2 Things..
First — Be careful what you call yourself… Are you a realtor, loanofficer, attorney or accountant? If so it is easy to put that under your name.. But it doesn’t tell people why they should use you … It only suggests you are one of hundreds or thousands in your area..
Your title should reflect why they should use you.. So as an example
If an accountant — tax savings expert
If a loan officer– mortgage consultant
If a realtor– home assesment analyst
SECOND– Most business cards I see have a blank back side…
You are paying for the card so why not use all of it that you can to get your message out. Here are some ideas to consider:
- Give them some information they can use.. I used to give factor tables.
- Send them to a website or 800 # for them to get a special report you wrote
- Give them some other valuable tip or tool that they will want to hang on to..

WHAT I JUST SAW AT DUNKIN DONUTS

One of the things that gets me going each and every morning is a cup of dunkin donuts coffee. It’s the best. But I have an important lesson to share with you so let’s get right to it huh? This morning I went in for my usual cup of coffee and the place was unusually crowded…
I looked around and saw a sign outside that was offering Batlimore County Teachers a free cup of coffee ( 16 oz.) every tuesday of the month. All they had to do was show their id.
NOW AT FIRST LOOK THAT SOUNDS CRAZY RIGHT?
You might ask why they would do such a thing? Won’t they go bankrupt from all the free coffee? There are alot of lessons to learn here so sit tight…
1. The idea of a “loss leader” has been used in retail forever. Lose money on the first sale but gain a customer. How can you do the same thing? How about a free book or special report you create? Or a video? Or any giveaway that relates to what you do and that your prospects will find valuable– How about a Free Review? Free Consultation?
2. They realize that people will probably buy a bagel or muffin or donut with their free coffee. What else can you offer your prospects in terms of additional services that you can generate some extra fees from. If you are a mortgage banker maybe it is a bi -weekly loan .. If you are a realtor maybe it is a warranty or other service connected to owning that home. If you are an insurance agent maybe you make zero on homeowners so you can get a chance to offer them life insurance or other financial services.
3. They are taking prospects and turning them into customers … their coffee is really great and if the only way to get people to try it is to give it away than that’s fine. …
Let’s talk about an example— You are a realtor and I have 143 properties I need to sell to clear up a partnership.. Would you list the first one at ZERO commissioin to you to get full commission on the other 142? What if you are a loan officer.. would you do my first deal for ZERO to get the rest of those deals?
That’s Exactly What Dunkin Donuts Is Doing .. BUT HERE IS THE BIGGER LESSON
They have gone after a targeted group of people with an irresistible offer…
Could you make next week Teacher Appreciation Week and offer them X —-?
Could you make the following week Fireman or Policeman appreciation week…?
Aside from all of the benefits I mentioned above– and all the new business.. It is a GREAT way to get FREE PUBLICITY for yourself. These are exactly the kind of stories that your local tv , newspaper and radio reportes are looking for… NOt to mention the publications for each of these groups. The teachers- firemen -policemen — you name it.. they all have their own membership lists and on-line and off-liine publications…
IF things are slow — think about being a little more creative….Now get back to work…
