I recently read a book that said if you wanted to be considered a world class expert on a topic you need to spend10,000 hours studying and doing “IT”Sounds like a lot of time so let’s break it down ok?</p>
<p>40 hours a week &#8212; 50 weeks a year ( 2 weeks off)</p>
<p>That’s only 2000 hours.</p>
<p>2000 hours x 5 years = $10,000</p>
<p>LOOKING BACK AT MY OWN LIFE- THAT’S PRETTY CLOSE</p>
<p>Years ago I was struggling. I actually thought that was what I was supposed to do. Aren’t you supposed to work hard and struggle? Isn’t it supposed to be hard?</p>
<p>YES YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD….</p>
<p>The truth is that most of us give up way too soon. Many of the people I have coached and consulted for gave up right when success was around the corner.</p>
<p>Now compare this to the attitude of I WILL MAKE IT NO MATTER WHAT! These are the ones who succeed. They cut off the safety net so they have no other choice.</p>
<p>Years ago I was petrified of computers or any technology for that matter. But I&#8217;m determined to learn it and become an expert.</p>
<p>I then went on to create multiple on-line businesses that each generated multi-millions of dollars annually and were valued at millions of dollars.</p>
<p>( I am currently creating one of these businesses in the mobile marketing space)</p>
<p>When I started in the mortgage business my manager gave me a product book and told me to “GO GET EM!” Again- I had no idea what I was doing but I was GOING TO MAKE IT NO MATTER WHAT!</p>
<p>I then went on to learn – become a nationally known expert and of course teach and coach tens of thousands of others.</p>
<p>AM I STAMMERING HERE? Or are you with me?</p>
<p>There are a few things I want you to take away f rom this article.</p>
<p>FIRST- DETERMINE YOUR GOAL AND MAKE SURE IT’S WORTH</p>
<p>YOUR INVESTMENT IN ENERGY AND TIME.</p>
<p>SECOND- BE DETERMINED. BE ABOUT IT!<br />
That’s a phrase one of my coaching members coined. Meaning that is all I thought about all day and night 24/7/365. Always thinking about your “It” and how to make it happen. Being willing to put in the effort and take the risk so you can get the reward. The alternative is to just be safe and mediocre and have your income and fate determined by others. Before you get too discouraged……</p>
<p>THERE IS ACTUALLY A SHORT CUT I DISCOVERED AND WANT TO SHARE.</p>
<p>Find someone who has already accomplished what you want to accomplish. They have already made the mistakes. They have already figured it out. They can provide you with the ultimate shortcut.</p>
<p>YES- There will be a price- but there’s a price in not getting expert help too and just struggling.</p>

The host who does a great job started to speak about success and some strategies for attaining success in the current economy.It got me thinking about the strategy of “HOPING” and how truly ridiculous that strategy is. Good to be optimistic- but HOPE IS NOT a STRATEGY.Let’s discuss that in greater detail here ok?</p>
<p>When I traveled around the country speaking one of the first questions I always asked my audience was “WHAT WOULD YOU DO FIRST IF I TOLD YOU TO GET TO KALAMZOO BY MIDNIGHT TOMMOROW AND I WILL GIVE YOU ONE MILLIONS DOLLARS?”</p>
<p>STOP READING NOW!!!! AND THINK BEFORE YOU CONTINUE READING!</p>
<p>Most of the responses I got were ” book a ticket” – “get in my car and drive” – “get on a train” etc. etc. and I guess at first glance that is really good. IMPLEMENTATION is a real key to success as I have shared in my portion of THE PHENOMENON(tm) DVD ADVENTURE</p>

<p>NOW stop and take a step back for a moment. Most people reading this have no idea where Kalamazoo is? Do they have an airport? How long does it take to drive there? What route do you take? Does the train stop there or in another town which means you would have to drive? If you did drive how long will it take ? Will you get there in time.. Remember there is a time limit here.. if you don’t get there by midnight you don’t get the one million dollars.</p>
<p>I know you are probably saying .. GET TO THE POINT BRIAN… so here goes..</p>
<p>Ask anyone if they want to be successful and of course they will say “YES” .. some even take action possibly even too much action because it is not focused action? So just doing stuff will NOT make you wealthy or produce profits for you … So let me go into some detail on exactly what TO DO ..</p>
<p>Step 1 – Know what you want – write it down EX – get 1 million dollars</p>
<p>Step 2- Know what you must do to accomplish it –write them down– EX: get to Kalamazoo by midnight</p>
<p>Step 3- Create a plan– again write it down— EXAMPLE– Map the route to Kalamazoo</p>
<p>Step 4- Monitor Your Progress- Do this weekly – EX: Did you take the wrong exit or highway?</p>
<p>I know this may all sound very simplistic to you but it DOES work … Knowing what you want, knowing when you want to get it by ( date) knowing how you are going to get it and finally — monitoring your progress will get you there ! It might be the fact that you write it down or it might be the whole constant exercise of reviewing your progress which makes you keep that “dream” or goal on your radar constantly….</p>
<p>As Nike says “just do it ” — don’t just read it !</p>

<p>Hard for me to even comment – I think Buddha hit it right on the head. However, I will say a few things in addition.</p>
<p><strong>First</strong>- If you don’t learn from your past mistakes than you are doomed to repeat them. We shouldn’t mourn the past but we need to grow from the experiences.  You should also know that your past doesn’’t control your future.</p>
<p>By all accounts I have no reason to be as successful as I am. I barely graduated high school. So know that your past DOESN’T control your future.</p>
<p><strong>Second</strong>- If you don’t worry about the future—I don’t think you can have a good one. Maybe worry is the wrong word.</p>
<p>I’ll speak more about each of these in this week’s articles.<br />

<td align="left" valign="top">Last Friday I met with a business that has 6 auto-repair facilities and a thriving business that has been around for almost a century. The President of this company is an older gentleman, nice guy.</p>
<p>I was there to show them the power of having their own mobile application. It would benefit them in many ways.</p>
<p><strong>-Stimulate Repeat Business.</strong></p>
<p>-It would be trackable and accountable to them.</p>
<p>-It would allow them to compete with the bigger chains with bigger budgets.</p>
<p>-BUT the biggest benefit of all would be the personal one on one communications between them and their customers right on their clients phone. Almost like putting your business right inside your clients pocket.</p>
<p>Unlike other media where you pay for the space like radio or tv or print , the mobile app stays on your clients phone forever. The other media stop when you stop running it.</p>
<p>But, that aside, this gentleman came to this meeting with many pre-conceived notions. He thought the technology was only for young kids. He thought it was too expensive. He thought it wouldn’t work. He didn’t have room for the QR code in his ads etc., etc., etc.</p>
<p>All of that came out right after I said hello and put down the presentation for him to see.</p>
<p>(<strong>BIG TAKEAWAY: LET YOUR PROSPECT TALK –THEY WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY HOW TO SELL TO THEM)</strong></p>
<p>When he finally got it all out of his system I started addressing all of his concerns. But the how I did it is the real lesson here.</p>
<p>I had done my homework and created a sample app for him on my phone. I put my phone in his hand. Turns out he has the exact same phone – so much for only young people having smart phones.</p>
<p>Then I went thru each feature and told him to imagine:</p>
<p>Your car broke down. You are stranded. You have several choices.</p>
<p>First- Call A tow truck. Second- Wait for the police and let them call a tow truck. Third- Click the “Click To Call” Feature on your app right on your phone . This would hook right up to his 24 hour dispatch and he would be the one sending out the tow truck thereby insuring that he gets the business!</p>
<p>You could see him light up as I went thru each feature.</p>
<p>Next I told him to imagine that he was a customer but money was tight. He has always come to this repair shop because he has an older car. He gets his oil changed and does routine repairs so the car will last longer.</p>
<p>Every time he goes to the shop he “checks in with his phone” and after 3 visits he gets a Free Oil Change! </p>
<p>Again- My prospects face lit up and he saw the immediate benefit.</p>
<p>Starting to get the picture? Too often – regardless of what business you are in- We tend to talk too much and not listen enough.</p>
<p><strong>FEW KEY POINTS FOR YOU TO USE TO GROW YOUR PROFITS:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Make your prospect “imagine” the benefits.</strong></li>
<li><strong>Always demonstrate if you can- Better than saying what you are GOING to do! Show them what it would look like.</strong></li>
<li><strong>Never worry about features- Always sell the benefits. </strong></li>
<li><strong>No- often means- you just haven’t convinced me yet.</strong></li>
</ol>

<p><strong>NO- OFTEN SIMPLY MEANS YOU HAVEN’T CONVINCED ME YET!!!</strong></p>
<p>Poor people accept no as an answer. Rich people start the “convincing process.”</p>
<p>This was actually my second time at this meeting. The first was when I had a mental rehearsal for the meeting. I went to a quiet place and imagined the questions I would be asked. I imagined the responses I would give and his reaction.</p>
<p>When the actual meeting occurred I was prepared for his responses and the reply I gave was smooth. Not forced. No fumbling!</p>
<p>Before I finish this issue – I want to go back to Buddha’s comment above. What I have learned coaching- consulting and from personal experience over the years is that what we all do is truly backwards.</p>
<p>We hope- pray- work hard etc to have a good life. But in reality you can actually create what that dream life looks life and then start building your life around it.  I’ll talk more about that in future issues but for right now go ahead and write down what your perfect life looks like- income wise, lifestyle wise, work wise.</p>

<p>But I will share one key that has helped me over the years in the GROW YOUR PROFITS SECTION BELOW.</p>
<p>The conversations we have in our brains everyday would shock us if we stopped and recorded them. I have found that there are 2 types of people in the world.</p>
<p>The first looks at every obstacle and opportunity and immediately thinks about all the reasons it can’t happen. All the things they lack. All the downsides.</p>
<p>The second sees the same opportunity and thinks about all of the obstacles as well. Then they determine to learn and succeed.</p>
<p>Please don’t confuse this with optimists and pessimists. That’s not what this is about. It’s much worse than that.</p>
<p><center>IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS TO YOU WHICH ONE SUCCEEDS!</center><strong>ACTION ITEM: The very next time you are in a situation that seems like an opportunity to you take a time out. Listen to those voices in your head. Write them down. </strong></p>
<p>Then determine to do whatever you need to do to succeed.</p>
<p><strong>Funny story- I was what you might call a math “dunce” in school. I was totally intimidated by math and simply said “I am bad at math.” Then for the next 26 years I spent my life attached to a calculator working in mortgages/real-estate finance and became one of the top lenders and trainers in the country. </strong></p>

<p>Years ago I worked in a shoe store. I was around 15 years old but realized that sales was going to be my profession. The store I worked in at the time was in a neighborhood that was clearly in transition.</p>
<p>During the day all of the “rich” people shopped in the mall and at night all of the new residents of the area, who were lower-middle class came in. It was almost as if it was a change of shift at a manufacturing plant.</p>
<p>After a few weeks I created my “Wrap.” You know, the sales pitch you give. But what I quickly realized is that I had to tailor it to these 2 different groups.</p>
<p><strong>YOU NEED TO SPEAK TO YOUR CUSTOMER: </strong>The key word here is <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">TO. </span></strong></p>

<p>Have you ever looked at your client and seen that blank stare- You know- Just like a deer in the headlights who is blinded.</p>
<p>Years ago a company contacted me and offered me a sophisticated computer program that showed the tax benefits of homeownership , how much equity was being built , and 12 pages of various program options for my mortgage clients.</p>
<p>They were totally confused when I told them to get lost and that I would never ever use or endorse such a program.</p>
<p>WHY?</p>
<p>Because I wanted to build a relationship with my borrowers and speak to them…. Not at – Not Down- Not Up !</p>

<p>Call me superstitious or crazy but I enjoy reading my horoscope. Yesterday here’s what it said. It’s so important that I thought I would share it with you and also teach you the listen in it. Ready?</p>
<p>Virgo: Remember the old saying “Be Who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind”</p>
<p>I can’t tell you how important that statement is. I would suggest that you cut it out and paste it somewhere you can see it regularly.  It’s so true in business and in your personal life.</p>

                STOP TRYING TO MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY.<br />

<p>For those of you who actually know me you know that I am pretty outspoken about what I believe in. You as a reader are reading because I stand for something. I have strong opinions. I truly don’t care who likes me or doesn’t if I believe what I am saying.</p>
<p>The problem is that most of us are sheep, afraid to take a stand but the truth is that people are attracted to people who STAND for something important.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In business I have often told the blunt truth- and guess what- people love me for it. They may not agree or they might agree- but it doesn’t matter – I believe in what I am saying.</p>
<p><strong>Let me take it a step further ok? </strong></p>
<p>You need to say what you believe- The people who don’t agree won’t buy from you anyway. The people who do agree will buy in greater numbers. Let go of that fear!</p>
<p>When I was originating I couldn’t stand watching people with credit issues get taken advantage of so I wrote a best selling book showing the rip off and the alternative. Was I criticized – You bet. Did it bother me? NO WAY !</p>
<p>When I coach clients privately or in groups I am blunt with my answers. That directness draws some closer who appreciate it and it alienates others- But they weren’t my buyers anyway!</p>

<p>I am sure this may offend some of you so sorry but I have to say this. I want to ask you a question. Last week the stock market dropped like a rocket. I sat on my chair in the office and laughed!<br />
I don’t have any money in the market- I didn’t think it was funny watching Billions of investment money being lost.</p>
<p><strong>WHAT IS A BROKER?<br />
</strong>Ever stop and think about the word “broke- er”  Years ago the market dropped and I lost over 100,000 in a few days. I got angry and called my “wealth manager” and complained. He told me that the market dropped ( NOSHIT) and that everyone had lost money.</p>
<p>Well first of all- that’s not true. Some people were protected and others actually made money. What really frustrated me was that I was totally capable of losing my money myself without paying him a  management fee.</p>
<p><strong>HERE ARE A FEW COMMENTS I WOULD LOVE YOUR THOUGHTS ON</strong>:</p>
<ol>
<li>Is your broker making you broke-er?</li>
<li>If no- -what are they doing ? Share it we could all use some good ideas.</li>
<li>If yes? Why are you still paying him/her?</li>
</ol>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">BIG QUESTION:  </span></strong></p>
<p>If Brokers were so good growing money – why are they brokers and NOT millionaires.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">TAKEAWAY:</span></strong> If you want to get wealthy – only take advice from people /professionals making at least the amount you want to make!<br />
Why would you invest your money with someone making 50,000 a year when you want to be a millionaire?</p>

<p>When I first saw this quote it really didn’t make sense. I could understand him saying that “Anything worthwhile is worth the effort to go after.”<br />
But what does he mean that it will “come to us?” Everything we are taught goes against this thought. Maybe every experience you have goes against it. So let me explain it and tell you my experience with this.</p>
<p><strong>WHEN YOU ARE READY THE TEACHER WILL APPEAR!</strong></p>
<p>Ever heard that one? Well it’s absolutely true. Years ago when I was struggling  in the mortgage business I knew there had to be a better way. I committed to finding it. And of course I found it. What I actually found was direct response marketing.</p>
<p>My entire office floor to ceiling is full of direct marketing classics , courses, and seminars. Later I decided I wanted to share what I had learned and started a information marketing company. Again- A teacher appeared out of nowhere when I was floundering trying to figure out what to do.</p>
<p>Funny- Years ago – My staff would not let me near a computer. But I decided that I was going to apply the direct response techniques I learned to the internet and created a way to help others with their sites.</p>
<p><strong>AGAIN- MY PARTNERS APPEARED- Ones who had all of the experience I lacked in the technical areas!</strong></p>
<p>This has happened to me so many times – and in so many different situations I want to leave you with a recipe. Now , for those of you who know me , you realize I am NOT one of those fooofy feel good kind of people.  So here’s the takeaway- Don’t ask me WHY it works. I honestly have many answers. But what’s important is that this is a “recipe” that works- so just do it.</p>
<p><strong>RECIPE</strong>: <strong>DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH- CREATE A CLEAR VISION- MAP OUT THE STEPS- START “DOING IT” !!!  Doesn’t matter if what you do is wrong-  Doesn’t matter if you don’t yet know all of the steps as long as you have a clear vision of what the end looks like!!!!</strong></p>

<p>I read an interesting statistic a few months ago. For the first time ever companies shipped more phones than they shipped laptops or computers.</p>
<p>SO WHAT?</p>
<p>The fight for the consumers attention is no longer being fought on TV, Radio, Newspapers. It’s not even being fought on the computer screen. It’s being fought for the screen on your cell phone.</p>
<p>Years ago I remember telling people about the benefits of having a website. Of course, I meant a direct response site that captured the visitors information and followed up on auto-pilot.</p>
<p><strong>BUT THINGS HAVE CHANGED FOREVER</strong></p>
<p>Here are some additional statistics to pay attention to.  E-mails have an open rate of about 5-10%. That means if you send 100 e-mails only 5-10 people will even open it. To be fair it could be that some don’t even get through.</p>
<p>Now check out this stat.  When you send a text or push message to someone’s  phone it gets a 97% view rate.</p>
<p><strong>STARTING TO SEE THE PICTURE HERE?</strong></p>
<p>In fact I just got back from an appointment with my programmer/designer and we are starting to build out some apps for a few different local businesses.</p>
<p>There are a few lessons to be learned here:</p>
<p>First- Make sure you are marketing where your clients are looking not just a place where a sales rep convinces you to spend your marketing dollars.</p>
<p>Second- Start learning about apps- Get a smart phone and start exploring.</p>
<p>Third- Commit to a date that you will have an app for your product and service.</p>

<p>This past weekend I got back from  visiting my daughter who is a freshman at Penn State. What a beautiful campus. If you are not familiar with it Penn State is located in Happy Valley and yes- everyone I saw there was happy.</p>
<p>Saturday night there were quite a few students who may have been a bit too happy but I’ll save that for another time.</p>
<p>I didn’t have a college experience due to my family circumstances. So it all made me wonder.</p>
<p>Will these kids get a good job?<br />
How long will it take them or their parents to pay off their school loans?<br />
What about all the poor people who took out equity loans for school and are now under-water?<br />
Will the diplomas really help these kids get a job in this economy?</p>
<p><strong>SORRY- THAT’S HOW MY MIND WORKS!</strong></p>
<p>It started me thinking about the difference between book smart and street smart! See the street smart person can always hire the book smart person for those tasks!</p>
<p>Sunday morning we went to the “Waffle House” which seems to be an institution right on the main drag. The line to get in went all the way down the block- no exaggeration.<br />
<strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">LESSON:</span></strong> Sorry can’t help myself here- You MUST always appear to be busy even if you are not. You should always have people waiting to get in rather than having too much capacity!</p>
<p>Now on to the story. This place was jam packed. My daughter tells me this is the way it is every single weekend and late night.<br />
The sign on the door said – No Debit or Credit Cards- No Lion Cash ( student cards). Don’t have cash, there’s an ATM right at the door they are making money on too!</p>
<p>I asked the guy at the door about the owner- He was a Greek Immigrant- he didn’t go to college. Had a great idea- worked hard- does well !</p>
<p>Please- I am not saying college is bad! What I am saying is that here’s a guy who is street smart making way more than most college professors who are only book smart!<br />
Guess what I am saying is that the most successful people are street smart doers!</p>

<div><span style="font-size: small;">But there is a dark side to addiction as well and I don&#8217;t want to minimize that here. So let&#8217;s call my recent problem an obsession instead of an addiction ok?</span></div>

While you may be saying that&#8217;s just plain stupid Brian I would suggest there are alot of lessons to be learned here.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-size: small;"><strong>First-</strong> We often become obsessed or addicted to things that make us less productive- Certainly brick breaker qualifies here as being unproductive.</span></div>

<div><strong><span style="font-size: small;">Second- </span></strong><span style="font-size: small;">My problem is that I feel compelled to continue to beat my best score ( 31193)  I keep playing hoping that I will beat it. I even notice my mood improving as I get close.</span></div>

<div><strong><span style="font-size: small;">Third-THIS IS A BIG ONE !</span></strong></div>
<div><span style="font-size: small;">In business if you have a product or service that becomes addicting than you have a recipe for success. This can apply to service businesses as well as hard products.<br />

<div><span style="font-size: small;">There is a pizza place that I think has the best pizza I have ever tasted and YES- I am addicted. Eat there Sunday and still think about it.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-size: small;">When I was in the mortgage business my goal was to have Realtors addicted to me and once I accomplished that my income soared.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: small;">I got them addicted to :<br />
<strong>1. Great service</strong></span></div>
<div><strong><span style="font-size: small;">2. Honesty</span></strong></div>
<div><strong><span style="font-size: small;">3. Knowledge</span></strong></div>
<div><strong><span style="font-size: small;">4. Dependability ( very different than great service so don&#8217;t confuse them)</span></strong></div>
