Why They Don’t Trust You

One of the things I find missing in most marketing messages is a BIG MOTIVATOR and Persuasion technique called PROOF. Most people selling a  product or service only focus on the results themselves and miss the importance of providing proof !

LET”S FACE IT — CONSUMERS ARE SKEPTICAL.

Everyone is bombarded with thousands of marketing messages each and every day. Think about your own day. Grab a paper and pen and write down all the messages you are exposed to online, on buses, on benches, on billboards, in the papers , on tv , on radio, even on peoples shirts and pants… Nothing is sacred anymore… Can’t even pump gas without seeing ads on tv screeens above the pump….

BUT YOU ARE SMART ENOUGH TO BE READING THIS ….so I’m going to not only share an important Persuasion technique you may be missing but I’m also going to give you a few ways to start using it right away to increase your marketing results.

The technique is to always show proof of who you are and why they should be listening to your Pitch ( sales presentation) about your product or service.

HERE ARES SOME WAYS TO SHOW THAT PROOF…

2. Tell them why you are doing what you do… As an example when I was offering mortgages for people who had a credit challange I told them how I was on the verge of bankruptcy myself , sitting in my bankruptcy attorneys office. I then realized that people in this circumstance were good people who had a bad experience and most of the time it was beyond their control. SO I made it my mission to help others in this situation and make sure they weren’t overcharged and were treated with respect.

3. Get testimonials from others you have helped.. This one topic alone could fill a full 90 minute teleseminar.. In fact I might just do one on this topic showing you how to get testimonials and how to use them effectively in your marketing … so stay tuned.

People just don’t believe what you say but they will believe what others like themselves say about you.

4. Get endorsements from other respected professionals  like attorneys, accountants, celebrities in your area , financial planners and others.

5. Create a guarantee that takes away all the risk of doing business with you … Guarantee your product or service.. Truthfully , if you can’t provide a guarantee you should rethink your business. I will talk about this in more detail in a future post.

LABOR DAY???

Labor day is coming up in a few days and it got me thinking about all the #)$(&#) that we are told. I was always taught work hard and you will get ahead. Man did I work hard. In fact I’ve been working full time since I was 14 years old and went to work at Baskin Robins scooping ice cream.

Just yesterday I had a consultation with one of my clients who was telling me that he was looking for ways to get passive income so he wouldn’t have to work so hard. So today I thought I would share some secrets I have learned..

Most people who want to sell you a program or “scheme” tell you how whatever they are selling you will make you rich quickly and how easy that is.  I’m here to tell you that is just pure BULL- sh-it.

There is no such thing.

What I have found is that there are businesses that can make you wealthy but all require work. Most people waste their hard earned money and time going from one pie in the sky scheme to another… They never dig deep on any one project.. They are always on to the next thing before they even give the first project a chance.

SO HERE ARE SOME SECRETS TO KEEP IN MIND

1. You want to find a business where you can do the work ONE TIME and have it produce income for you for years to come.

2. You want to have a business that provides you with continuity income.  Like an insurance agent who gets renewals, or a gym or magazine that gets subscription each and every month. In my previous business I wrote a newsletter and had hundreds of paid subscribers. Each and every month I woke up and knew I had money coming in… What a great feeling that is !

3. You want  a business that is “saleable” and continuity income is usually what a business buyer is looking for since it is close to a predicatble income stream each and every month. Wouldn’t you like to own your local cable , phone, gas and electric company? Each and every month they are getting paid…

One of the greatest things in the world is to be able to go away and know that you have income coming in.

YOU MUST WORK HARD ! But you must also work smart and have a business that will throw off income continuously. Many scoundrels are out there telling you just do this or that and you will become rich.. Trust me, I have tried most of them and they are NOT real..

THE BRIAN SACKS FORMULA– Work Hard- Build a Continuity based business. Put systems in place to continuously bring in new clients THEN AND ONLY then can you kick back…. I told my client to actually work harder not work less! He needed to build his current business not get diverted and start working on other things..

Information Marketing Businesses can provide this lifestyle

Many of my most successful clients now have all 3 and are doing quite well.. You are NOT a hero if you JUST work hard.. I worked really hard and all I got was tired , grumpy and burnt out. The missing ingredient was working smart … and working on a business where the work is done once and I get paid over and over again.

What Do These People Have In Common With You?

Today is my birthday and it is the time of year I reflect back and also look forward. Alot of people do this on Jan 1 ( and I do too.) But reflecting and planning on your birthday is better in my opinion  you are a goal oriented person like I am.

I wanted to be a millionaire by age 30– Turns out I was off by a decade. But everything I did in my 30’s helped set the foundation for all I have accomplished in my 40’s . I mean not only the wealth but also the lifestyle that I ONLY dreamed about .. or thought was only possible if you were a member of the “lucky sperm club” meaning– you were born wealthy..

All of this got me to thinking about you.. what challanges you have… what demons you are trying to slay both physically and mentally. Having been successful and having struggled I can tell you a few things.

1. Most people give up way too soon. Usually right before they are about to succeed.
Here are some examples

1. Michael Jordan - didn’t make his high school basketball team.

2. Oprah– a failed reporter

3. Jk Rowling - broke and homeless

5. Henry Ford– Bankrupt 5 times

and I’m sure you realize I could go on and on.

Bottom Line is that you must have a plan and continue working it UNTIL you succeed. Be immune to critics.. Stay focused.

Thomas Edison tried thousands of times to create the lightbulb. He is famous for saying that the only reason he succeeded was because he ran out of failures.

So now in my 44th year I have  a few big projects I am working on and I will make them work because I will keep trying until they DO !!!!!!

Take a few minutes and reflect back on your past– think about and plan what your future looks like and then for goodness sake —- GO OUT AND DO IT !

Why I Write This And The Marketing Lessons….

Many New Subscribers Who Don’t know me have been writing in asking me “WHY ARE YOU JUST GIVING AWAY such useful and profitable information?”  Great question.. so I am not only going to answer it here but I am also going to show you why you need to follow this model too … so you can see your profits explode.

LET’S START WITH THE ASSUMPTION THAT ….. most of you are proffessionals offering a service like a Realtor, Mortgage Broker, Insurance Agent- Attorney , Financial Planner etc. Some of you may also own a bricks and mortar business… Doesn’t really matter because this lesson applies to everyone regardless of what you “sell”

HERE’S WHY

Many of you know me as a national trainer , Coach, Consultant, Serial Entrepeneur. I have built and sold several Multi Million Dollar business which I have grown quickly. In all of these businesses I had a newsletter (written or on-line) that I used to communicate with my prospects and clients. To be really honest I still have a lot to say and found that I had no one to tell it to once I sold these businesses.  AS you will soon find out.. I really enjoy watching people succeed and more importantly take the “shortcuts” I discovered that work like magic.

YES - THERE IS ANOTHER REASON TOO… and that is of course to generate revenue from this site. and here are THREE BIG IDEAS..

1. As a salesperson ( which everyone is) don’t treat your prospects like they are stupid.. They aren’t . Don’t disguise the fact that you will eventually being “offering them something” Come right out and tell them. That will diffuse them and allow them to start listening to you instead of waiting for the BIG BOOM to drop… They know you are going to .. so just be honest and tell them.

2. Do you know what value people put on “Free Information”? the answer is ZERO ! So if you happen to go around giving free advice and are wondering why people aren’t listening … now you have the answer. Serious people , who are anxious , committed to succeed will seek out quality information , from an established expert who has a track record, and will happily pay for it..  So I know the most serious in this group will eventually invest in information guaranteed to generate profits. Which brings me to THE BIGGEST LESSON.

PAYING ATTENTION? THIS IS A BIG ONE– AND IT”S AN EASY ONE FOR YOU TO USE ASAP !

3.You MUST ALWAYS PROVIDE VALUE BEFORE YOU ASK FOR THE BUSINESS!!! ( please re-read this and burn  it into your mind”

Most salespeople ( reagardless of what you are offering) go after clients telling them how wonderful they are .. how great the company is .. how great the product or program is.. etc.etc. etc… But how do most clients respond? They run away… some politely , some just flat out tell you to forget it… some tell you they have to “think about it ” ( that’s one of the most frustrating responses isn’t it?)

They have never even stopped to ask the prospect what they want? What their concerns are ? What issues they are trying to address or problems they are looking to fix.. They just VOMIT all the information they can about themselves , their company , their product and hope one of them hits the bullseye. 
These are the frustrated - burnt out - excuse makers -

They blame the economy- They Blame the company- They blame their pricing structure for their lack of sales..

SO HERE’S THE SECRET OF WHY I WRITE THIS BLOG AND WHAT YOU NEED TO START DOING NOW!!

YOU NEED TO PROVIDE “VALUE” BEFORE YOU ASK FOR THE SALE…. That’s what I hopefully have accomplished with this site… Snoop around the site.. Snoop around the articles and past posts in the various categories( told you I had a lot to say and I’m just getting started)
Think about how you got on this site to begin with… It was because I gave you two great classics on wealth creation for FREE.

Before you get scared and wait for a pitch… RELAX– there isn’t one in this article… But I will be soon offering some webinars but I will first ask you what you want to learn about more in-depth.  Do you ask your prospects what they want? Or do you just tell them what you got? 

You now have the opportunity to view these posts and know what I’m about. You will either like me or you will simply unsubscribe.. Either one is fine… I don’t say that to be rude, but again there is a lesson here– Only market to people you are right for.. take a stand .. show conviction. and don’t worry about the people who don’t like you …. They aren’t going to buy from you anyway. Cater only to people who are receptive to your message… It is too hard to sell to people who aren’t receptive..

The Secret Ingredients You May Be Missing?

If you have been wondering why your business just isn’t at the level you want/need it to be at than read this article now.

There are many ingredients that you need to convince your prospects to use your services or buy from you. In this post I will go over them broadly and then in future posts I will dig deeper into each one.

1. Authority. — you need to be seen as the expert.

2. Pick a Niche– Be a specialist not a generalist.

3. You must solve a  have.problem your customers

4. You must be seen as the obvious choice.

5. Your promise must be believable.

6. IT MUST NEVER EVER BE ABOUT PRICE !!! ( re-read this one)

7. Must be easy to order from you.

8. You must have a built in mechanism for repeat business and referrals.

9. You must be able to guarantee your product or services.

10. you must have an irresistible offer.. People must feel if they pass this up they are just dumb.

11. It must have a sense of urgency– A deadline for an action.

12. You must be able to describe it within 30 seconds… a USP.. or as I call it an Elevator Speech.

13. You must be able to get it out to targeted prospects.

14. You must have systems that allow you do the hard work for you in an automated way.

I would suggest that you print this out and post it where you can look at it.. Consider it a checklist of sorts and stay tuned for future posts where I will go into more detail on each one and tell you exactly how to apply them.

ARE YOU HAVING A “MENTAL” RECESSION?

Yes - things are getting tougher out there. If you simply read your paper and watch the local newscasts you might be tempted to jump off the roof. Gas prices high. Home prices dropping like a rock. Stock market in the toilet. Harder to get credit. Foreclosures at all time highs.  Companies laying off people by the thousands.

I just finished reading the paper — and felt like I need to take a valium or prozac. Good thing I don’t have any– Nor do I need any?

WHY?

One of the big lessons I want to share with you today is how your thinking effects everything. AND how doing the opposite of what is normal is the BIG KEY to success in everything you do. I know it is counter-intuitive ( sorry for the big words here) but that is what usually works.. Just being different. It was one of those big discoveries that changed everything for me personally and financially.

Ready for the secret? Good cause here it is.. Please re-read it several times so it sinks in.

STOP CUTTING BACK AND START FINDING WAYS TO MAKE MORE

Sounds simple I know- But most of the BIG MILLION DOLLAR IDEAS I share here are. Doesn’t have to be complicated . It just has to work. So let’s dig in here and let me give you some real ideas.

You have only so much energy you can use in any one day , week, year. When you read the news it is natural to get nervous and even depressed. So you wind up spending that alloted amount of energy trying to figure out ways to cut back.  Ways to spend less money. Ways to conserve what you got.Plus all of the extra time and energy you spend just feeling down, depressed, worried and scared. I was going to say nervous but I think scared is probably more like reality -right?

NOW YOU COULD TAKE THAT SAME AMOUNT OF ALLOTED ENERGY AND…

try to figure out ways to make money. HERE IS A REALITY CHECK ! People are still making money. Some have waited years for just this type of economy and are making a big fat pile of money. I know from personal experience- About 7 years ago I was facing two BIG new expenses and my business was just doing ok.. not bad.. not great.  The first event was my mom needing to go into a nursing home which was going to cost 5000 per month. While I was digesting that I found out that my son who is dyslexic needed to go to a school that cost close to 30,000 per year.  My first reaction was OH SHIT ! NOW What do I do?

My wife quickly started freaking out and trying to figure out what we could cut back on it. To be honest , after my intial shock and mental paralysis wore off I started freaking out too. But we both quickly realized that even if we sold our house and cut back on everything else we were still not going to make it.. so we just needed to change the equation. BTW- We didnot live extravegently and still don’t - here is a side lesson–

NEVER LIVE ABOVE YOUR MEANS, NEVER EVEN LIVE AT YOUR MEANS.. ALWAYS LIVE SLIGHTLY BELOW

WE NEEDED TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE MORE MONEY - CONSISTENTLY

That was when I started my information marketing businesses. I was able to quickly build it to a multi-million dollar business in less than3 years and sell it for 7 figures. During this time I started several other multi-million dollar business and own intersets in almost 20million dollars worth of real-estate. HERE ARE YOUR TAKEAWAYS -

1. Most of what determines your success or failure is mental attitude.

2. You can choose to hide under the desk and be totally paralyzed until the economy changes or you can be proactive and find ways to make more money— There is no shortatge.  In fact let’s just take a quick look at 2 people living within the same zip code in one town. One just lost their home to foreclosure and one is buying it and negotiating a short sale with the bank that could lead them to a six figure profit …. Main difference– Believe it or not — Is attitude.

3. Your biggest accomplishments will come when you are at your lowest - as long as your mind is in the right place. If I had not had those 2 BIG Financial Crises hit me at that time I would not be where I am today.. I would be a struggling loan officer figuring out how to cut back and taking my daily dose of ulcer medicine.

YEAH — I know– Easy for me to say.. Well I didn’t know anything about information marketing, coaching, consulting, commercial real-estate investing. GEEEZ ! I didn’t even know how to work a computer- So stop saying I had an advantage.. The only one I had was DESIRE and THE RIGHT MINDSET..  and you can too !

Now go figure out how to make more NOT spend less..

This Marketing Lesson Changes Everything…

I’m going to start by giving the lesson right to you … Ready?

SELL WHAT YOU GOT— WHAT “THEY” WANT … NOT WHAT “YOU” WANT TO SELL…

Take a minute and re-read that so it sinks in.. Doesn’t matter whether you are selling a product or a service, you should always go into the marketplace and find out what your market wants and give it to them.. What an easy recipe huh?

But that is not what most business owners or professional practice owners do. Instead they fall in love with “It:” and then go out and try to find people to sell it to… Let me give you an example from a business near and dear to me .. The Mortgage Industry.

One of the issues right now is the BIG MORTGAGE MELTDOWN and CRISIS . Lenders closing their doors left and right. So many  mortgage company owners and originators have been asking me what to do about it… Seems like all doom and gloom.  Business is slow and then you get a deal and have no idea if the lender you send it to will be in business to fund it.

TRY THIS– Find the lenders who have been around the longest, and offer stable programs and then ONLY market to people who meet that criteria. This goes for any industry or service.

What loan officers do is go out and market and then try to find the lender for that dea.  JUST SWITCH THE FORMULA– Find the lender and programs first and then find the buyers who meet that criteria.

If you are selling bikes- Find out which bikes you are going to sell… then market to those who like that sort of bike. For example- If you are selling high priced racing bikes that weigh 10 ounces and are made of some space age metal– Only market it to people who are likely to buy it. Don’t try to sell it to a kid as their first bike. Or to a young family for their Sunday rides.

Put it to use in your business or practice —It will change everything- for the better..

The Secrets Of Bejing Olympic Athletes- Use This In Your Business

You can’t help watching the OIympics. I spent most of the morning watching USA basketball, swimming , volleyball and bike races. We have 2 famous swimmers from Baltimore Michael Phelps and a girl named Katie Hoff and they are the talk of the town.

Watching these Athletes got me thinking and so here I am in front of the computer wanting to share it with you. So Listen up. There is much more to the Olympics than just watching the Athletes. There are numerous marketing lessons …. Watch the new commercials, Watch what the athletes are wearing…

Hey - before I give you the lesson I wanted to GIVE YOU A MILLION DOLLAR IDEA (ok?)

One of the things you should be on the lookout for at all times is how to tie your product or service into the news or current affairs. Guess you want some examples of what I’m talking about huh?

– If you are selling a product why not tie your discounts into the amount of gold medals won by your countries athletes ?  ( this blog is read by thousands around the world so I don’t want to seem to biased … but yes I want the USA to win the most.) So if  USA wins 10 medals you get 10% off etc.

— Offer an Olympic sized _________________?

- If you offer a service you can do the same thing… Each day the USA wins ______medals — gold , silver or bronze you offer new clients _____________% off your service

OR — Whether you are offering a product or service you could tie in a % of proceeds from your sales during that week to a charity tied to the Olympics. The bottom line here is to get publicity for your promotion and tie it into the current events that are already on your customer or prospects minds.
Right now that is the Olympics .. Next month it could be your home teams acheivements. Or even their lack of success. If they stink create a promotion that gives your customers or clients something when your team breaks their streak and wins.
WHY NOT GO ONE BETTER ?

Get someone from the team or a retired player or sportscaster to be in the promo with you? This use of celebrity can be very very powerful and profitable and very inexpensive or even free.

 

NOW BACK TO WHY I WROTE THIS POST IN THE FIRST PLACE

Guess I needed to get that million dollar piece off my chest.. I hope you use it. But that is not why I started writing this post. I wanted to share with you what you can learn from these Olympic Athletes in Bejing.  Now I’m going to have to burst your bubble here so prepare yourself. I’ll give you a minute to digest.. Ready?

Watching these athletes compete it seems like what they are doing is almost effortless. KEY WORD HERE IS “SEEMS.” But the reality is that these Olympians are up at 4 or 5 every single morning. No excuses. Nothing gets in their way. They are never distracted.

- They are focused on achieving their goals. PERIOD.

- ( here is the bubble bursting sentence) THEY WORK HARD. REALLY REALLY HARD. Don’t be fooled into thinking there is a way to make “easy money”. You can make money quickly, you can make money regardless of your current or past situation or even your lack of resources. BUT YOU MUST WORK HARD. At least at first. If you are smart you do the hard work once and find ways to get paid for it over and over again for many many years. — Most of us are always looking for the next BIG THING to help us change our situation. But reality is that focused energy on one project is where the real big money is.. I’m guilty of this myself due to my Entrepenurial ADHD but luckily I am able to quickly realize it and get back on track.

- THEY ARE NOT AFRAID TO FAIL…. Most of us don’t even try so we are automatic failures. These Athletes work hard , every single day, with focused energy and concentration , and they might not win. Are you able to try something and fail?  When you do fail you must just pick yourself up and move on . Make lemonade out of the lemons. Most of these Athletes , if they lose , will still make a lot of money using the skills they aquired by becoming top coaches and trainers. Even the losers are still celebrities in theri countries and can use that celebrity for endoresements etc.

So there  you have it… A BIG MILLION DOLLAR IDEA to grow your profits and some key lessons to think about as you watch the BEJING OLYMPICS…..

What To Do If You HATE Your Clients?

Many of the consulting clients and coaching clients I work with HATE their clients. They tell me that they are: too cheap, too lazy, don’t return phone calls, are too irritating, expect too much, are too price sensitive, too hard to get in touch with … and on and on.. and on…

What I am about to tell you may sound very simple on the surface at first but stick with me and I will take  you by the hand and show you exactly what to do.

IF YOU HATE YOUR CLIENTS IT IS YOUR FAULT!

I first heard these words from Dan Kennedy one of the foremost marketing minds in the world. It really didn’t hit me at first.. How could it be MY fault that my clients are horrible pains in the butt?  Well guess what — If you hate your clients it really is YOUR fault. Why? Well you choose them .. right?  So here is the simple answer of what to do if you hate your clients…FIRE THEM !

NO THAT WAS NOT A MISPRINT

You choose them and you hate them.. So fire them ! Yeah , I know you are scared out of your mind just at seeing this in writing so I’m going to explain to you how its done. Here are several examples of real life situations I have had and how I handled this. I will give them to you from the mortgage industry but they are applicable FOR EVERY business… But only if you have the Courage to do it.

— I used to do most of my business with Realtors and most were an enormous pain in the butt who called consistently , bitching , whining, screaming and always trying to beat me down on my rates and points.  So I fired the ones I didn’t like .. and three things happened.

1. My income went up dramatically because I was no longer in a bad mood or wasting time with agents who were “just using me” and could spend more time marketing.

2. I was much happier - See # 1

3. Agents and borrowers had more respect for me and rarely questioned my fees because word had gotten out that I would actaully FIRE clients and agents.

I have done the same with my high level coaching program ( Platinum Group) . This is a group of successful , high level, high energy, business owners from around the country who I coach and consult with… They MUST apply for admission to this ELITE group.  They pay over 20,000 dollars a year to participate.

Over the years I have publicly fired 3 of them from this group. Yes , Right in front of a 2 day group meeting I have told them to leave , paid for the ticket there and home and given them an instant refund. Each of them has seemed dumbfounded. “You mean you won’t take 20,000 from me?”

YUP — THAT”S RIGHT ! ONE OF THE THINGS YOU WILL NOTICE WHEN YOU FIRE THEM…

is that word gets out and the rest of the group starts to fall in line. Or as I say it.. The rest of the inmates go back to their cells and the riot is over.

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED … that you spend over 80% of your time with prospects or clients that produce only 20% of your income. THE CORRECT equation is to spend 80% or more of your resources on the people who produce most of your income. Ignore or fire the rest.  Don’t be scared .. Just do it.

SO HERE IS YOUR PLAN

- If your clients/propects are cheap — find the ones willing to spend money.  They are out there. Want me to prove it to you? Look around your town. There is most likely a McDonalds or Burger King and then there is the bar/resteraunt that sells a 9 or 10 dollar burger.
There is a Hyundai dealership and probably a Cadillac dealer. There is a Walmart that sells watches and jewelery and there is a fine jewelery store. Yeah — I know — You provide a service right? Well I would bet you that there is an H and R Block or Jackson Hewitt and also an accountant who charges north of 100 or 150 an hour… and all of these businesses are doing fine. You just have to choose who you want to be and go after ONLY those type of prospects.

– If your clients complain or are a constant pain in the butt.. Just fire them. Word will get out that you are serious and won’t play games.

— If your clients expect too much– Set the expectations up front and then over deliver

— If your client value for each deal is too small… Find ones that generate bigger ones. In the mortgage industry my members used to complain about small loan sizes. My advice has made them 100’s of thousands of dollars. Start finding areas with BIGGER LOAN AMOUNTS.. Almost every major area in the country has an affluent area within a 50 mile drive of where you are..

Allright– my fingers hurt from this one so time to wrap it up..

ACTION PLAN: Fire your time wasters and pains in the butt. I know its scary. It was for me to. But doing it ( in a proffessional way) will make you money and make your life much happier. Now grab a pen and pad and write down what your ideal prospect/client looks like… You will never get what you want if you don’t take the time to quantify what that looks like.

NOW start marketing ONLY to people who meet this profile.. This is so different than what most people do or think. We start marketing and then feel we are forced to deal with whoever and whatever comes our way…
WHY NOT ONLY INVITE THE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO WORK WITH TO RESPOND ! Imagine having a party and putting an ad in the paper and allowing who shows up to come in? Of course you wouldn’t do that so why do that with your business?

I am really sorry and I hope we can remain friends.. Best of luck.. ” or  what I am saying to myself at that time! “SEE YA –WOULDN’T WANT TO BE YA!”
