Economic Meltdown- 14 Tips

The year was 1989 and I was just married and trying to make my $600.00 per month rent. All the news talked about each day was the pending savings and loan crisis and a ton of doom and gloom.

At the time I was working for a local savings and loan called Baltimore Federal. Things were ok.. I was doing some business but not really doing too well..

THEN  SUDDENLY ONE DAY I WAS… no longer working for Baltimore Federal but instead we were one of the first in the country to be taken over by the government - Resolution Trust Corporation. Needless to say things weren’t great and the government has no clue how to run a mortgage company. Sometimes I have to wonder if they know how to run a government.

THIS WAS THE GREAT SAVINGS AND LOAN CRISIS OF THE LATE 80″s … and I found myself rigth in the middle of it.. Many went to jail.. Most savings and loans went bankrupt and permanently closed.

LIKE DEJAVU ALL OVER AGAIN..

IN the 90’s another crisis with mortgage companies going under in 1994 and many going bankrupt and to jail. Fast forward to our current crisis. The BIG NEWS is that this is a cycle that has repeated itself over and over for the past 3 decades.

LOOSE GUIDELINES- LOW RATES– GREEDY INVESTORS AND BANKS all spell disaster.. This current one is a doozy and I don’t think we have seen the worst of it yet… But from all of these experiences there are a few things I have learned and want to share with you …

I started thinking about all of the things I did to survive and even thrive.. See reality is many will go under and fail but a small few will THRIVE– They will see the opportunities and seize them.
I’m not sure which of those 2 you are but here are 14 things I discovered to help you prosper during this crisis..
Why not thrive instead of just surviving?

THINGS TO DO TO THRIVE

 

 

1.    DON”T STOP MARKETING ….

USE TRACKABLE TOOLS – CAN’T AFFORD TO WASTE EVEN A PENNEY—EMOTIONAL DIRECT RESPONSE INSTEAD OF BRANDING
DON”T USE WEST VIRGINIA MARKETING

 

2.    GET CREATIVE— YOU MUST USE NEW TOOLS—WHAT YOU HAVE MAYNOT BE WORKING – DO THINGS THAT AREN”t COMFORTABLE BUT ARE PRODUCTIVE AND EFFECTIVE

 

3.    POSITION YOURSELF IN YOUR MARKETPLACE—DON”T BE A PART OF THE HERD

 

 

4.    GIVE PEOPLE WHAT YOU GOT  — FIND THE PEOPLE WHO WANT WHAT YOU GOT AND SELL IT TO THEM INSTEAD OF BEING EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE

 

5.    WORK— SORRY !- -BUT BE SMART

 

 

6.    SET REALISTIC GOALS AND MONITOR THEM EACH AND EVERYDAY—ASK YOURSELF IF WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS GETTING YOU CLOSER

 

7.    MAKE SURE YOUR MINDSET IS CORRECT……

 

 

8.    SHARPEN YOUR TOOLS AND  ADD NEW ONES TO YOUR TOOLBOX — YOU MUST HAVE MULTIPLE WAYS TO GET NEW BUSINESS

 

9.    STAY AWAY FROM NEGATIVE PEOPLE — AND BECOME “MENTALLY RECESSION PROOF”

 

 

10.                       FIND A MENTOR WHO HAS BEEN THERE….AND LISTEN—THIS IS A BIG SHORT CUT

 

11.                       STOP DOING $10.00 an HOUR WORK —- YES EVEN NOW

 

 

12.                       YOU MAY NEED TO FINANCE  YOURSELF…. THINK ABOUT THE COST of OPENING A FRANCHISE LIKE SUBWAY — WHERE BEST ONES MAKE 35,000

 

 

13.                       STAY FOCUSED— STOP BEING TEMPTED BY EVERY NEW SHINY THING THAT YOU SEE>>>>
 It is good to have multiple streams of income but be very careful….. going down that path. Keep them in this business if you can – make more from each client …

8 or More Things You Can Learn From An NFL Game

This article is going to be jam packed with info so you might want to print it out. Almost like a little marketing seminar for you.Late Saturday night one of my son’s friends Dad called and asked if we wanted tickets to the Ravens game.

We didn’t really need to think about it since this was the Ravens VERSUS the Browns. For those of you who aren’t football fans here’s the story- Baltimore was famous for having the Baltimore Colts. Many years ago the owner moved the team to Indianappolis in the middle of the night.

So of course we went on a hunt for a team and “took” the team from Cleveland. So this was a grudge match game. Now here is where you need to pay attention. As I sat at this game I couldn’t help but think of all the marketing lessons that were right in front of me and I couldn’t wait to back home and share them with you so you could start profiting from them.

LESSON # 1– RECIPROCITY
The seats to this game were amazing- 50 yard line row 10 from the field. AND a parking pass that allowed me to park right in front of the stadium. Needless to say this was awsome and my 11 year old was in heaven. But all I could think of was these tickets that cost 110.00 a piece. I owe this guy big time.

See if you ever want to have someone indebted to you give them a present. Doesn’t matter how expensive it is. In fact they don’t even have to like it. I personally would have preferred to stay home and watch the game without pushing thru 71,000 raving fans ( way too many drunks). If this Dad ever needs us to pick up his kid from school or watch him when he doesn’t have a babysitter I now have no choice but to say yes.

This is the same concept charities use when they send you a gift , like those personalized labels or holiday cards etc in the mail along with a form to send in your donation.
If you want to use this prinicipal give your clients, prospects, customers something so they can be indebted to you.

LESSON #2 - CREATE LEVELS IN YOUR BUSINESS
One of the things all major league teams do well is separate the services to the cheaper ticket holder versus those with expensive seats or boxes. This is a great marketing tactic that you should start employing in your business. Most of us spend way too much time with our “cheap” or lower tier clients or prospects when the real money is spending your efforts on your best prospects and clients who produce the majority of your income and profits….

LESSON # 3-MENTAL PRACTICE
We got to the game a little early, guess that’s because we had such a great parking space , so we were able to see both teams practice before the game. Both teams were on the field exercising and running plays. Then I looked to the side and saw the kicker. He was practicing but without a football in his hand . He was looking at the goal posts and kicking air…

What he was really doing is something that you need to do too. See he was mentally kicking. He was practicing in his head. He was visualizing.

The lesson here is that all succesful people in any field always mentally rehearse. So STOP right now and block some times in your planner to do some mentall rehearsing. Practice your sales calls. Listen to your prospects objections and answer them. Watch your prospects reactions. LESSON # 4- THE RAVENS NEW QUARTERBACK JOE FLACCO — THE MINDSET

Many in the stadium were rooting for our new rookie quarterback Joe Flacco. A good quarterback is something this team has been missing for many many years. This was this guys second game in the NFL. He started off doing great but then he got intercepted and the other team used this opportunity to score and take the lead. Then with the Ravens on the 1 yard line ready to score he boblled the ball and almost turned it over again.

This happens to you every day. Nothing ever goes the way we planned it. Roadblocks pop up. Business plans don’t work out. The difference between success and failure is how you recover from those setbacks. This guy picked himself up and went on to play his game on his terms and we beat Cleveland 28 to 10.

Think of what would have happend if he just collapsed mentally becuase of all the pressure and problems? Instead , he left those plays behind him and continued on to success.. You need to do exactly the same.

LESSON # 5 — RAVING FANS

There were 71,209 people screaming and hollering at the game yesterday. Every seat in the house was taken. Guy in front of me was totally bold and had the Raven Logo tattoed on his head. ( BTW– could be a great business.. selling ad space on those heads…)

These fans were buying Ravens jerseys , hats , calendars , trailer hitches etc.etc. You name in and if it had Ravens on it they were buying it. So the question is do you have raving fans? Do your customers rave about you? If not start figuring out how to get them talking about you and telling everyone in their sphere of influence about you..

LESSON #6 BRAND ADVERTISING
All around this stadium were signs for various businesses. They also gave out programs that were jam packed with ads. Problem is that most of these ads were NOT targeted but just meant to “brand” the companies so alot of it was wasted on people who had no use for these services.

Don’t get me wrong- The Budweiser signs were a great fit. But the RYLAND HOMES sign , which I assume cost the same amount of money probably wasn’t. I doubt there were 5000 out of those 71000 who were going to be buying a home in the next 12 months.

LESSON # 7– LASER TARGETED ADS
Right before half time I went to the bathroom. CHAOS>>> Lots of drunk guys pushing and shoving and of course hollering at the top of their lungs. But right above the stalls is a sign for a medical group called Chesapeake Urology- Their sign asks if you are having trouble with frequent urination.. erections etc.. and tells you to visit their site.

Now that sign is laser targeted… Guys in the bathroom , relieving themselves.
Are your ads targeted to your prospects so that you are getting the most bang for your marketing dollars?
EXAMPLE– If you are a realtor or loan officer or title company — even an accountant or insurance agent.. Why not advertise in a HOMES MAGZINE instead of your towns’ newspaper.
You know anyone picking up a homes magazine is thinking about buying a home , but only a small fraction of those reading the main newspaper in town are in need of your services.

LESSON # 8 YOUR TEAM…
You are only as good as your team. Whether in sports or in business you need to make sure that you have a staff that is motivated to cover your butt.. Imagine if the Ravens offensive line just let the other team get by and sack the quarterback..

You are the quarterback on your team so make sure everyone is motivated to cover your back and all working towards accomplishing the same goal… Hopefully the one you set.

LESSON # 9– GO TO GUY

This rookie quarterback , Joe Flacco , had 2 or 3 go to guys for most of the game. Some ran the ball some he passed to..

Are you the go to guy for your customers? This gets back to what I have always preached which is pick a niche , become the expert, and let everyone know about it.

You need to be seen as the “GO TO PERSON” in your industry. PERIOD !!!!!

LESSON # 10– YOUR PLAY BOOK

Ok- Let’s wrap this up with this lesson. What does your play book look like? Do you have more than one way to move the ball downfield? ( get new business)
Imagine a quarterback only having one play and his go to guy gets hurt? With only 1 play in the quarterbacks playbook the other team would just learn how to defend against it and the game would be over.

Start building your own playbook.. YOU MUST HAVE MULTIPLE WAYS TO GENERATE NEW BUSINESS.. CONSISTENTLY…

BTW– before you ask me which one idea is the best… I want to tell you that you should be using all of them… or as many as possible. They all work together for your benefit.

IS YOUR BUSINESS CARD EASILY TOSSED????
I wanted to start with your most basic tool which is your card… IS it like eveyone elses card.
You know what I mean right? Does it have your name? All your awards and title..???
Is it thin or thick stock? Does it have your photo on it??

Let’s attack these one by one… Ready?

Your name– can’t do much about that..
Your Awards and titles.. By all means put them on there to credentialize yourself.
Your Photo– You should always include your photo on every marketing piece you put out.
The Stock- I like thicker stock so it feels more substansial. I have even see people send
out their cards in plastic , on a rolodex card with the perferations already cut out. Even got one that was gold plated ( heavy)

In fact, for a short period of time I gave out my card as a disk… I wrote a book called YES YOU CAN GET A MORTGAGE and had the cover put on a cd and the book was on it along with my contact info– ( VERY POWERFUL)

I also had a cd business card business where your card was put on a disk and inside the disk
for a bunch of special reports and calculators … info they wanted …
Regardless of your industry you could copy this idea– these business size disks cost about a buck.. but all you need is one to client to make up for hundreds or thousands of these. They are unique and they get used AND KEPT !!!!

THE BIG THING MOST PEOPLE MISS IS …Actually 2 Things..

First — Be careful what you call yourself… Are you a realtor, loanofficer, attorney or accountant? If so it is easy to put that under your name.. But it doesn’t tell people why they should use you … It only suggests you are one of hundreds or thousands in your area..

Your title should reflect why they should use you.. So as an example
If an accountant — tax savings expert
If a loan officer– mortgage consultant
If a realtor– home assesment analyst

SECOND– Most business cards I see have a blank back side…
You are paying for the card so why not use all of it that you can to get your message out. Here are some ideas to consider:
- Give them some information they can use.. I used to give factor tables.
- Send them to a website or 800 # for them to get a special report you wrote
- Give them some other valuable tip or tool that they will want to hang on to..

ARE YOU INSANE?

First let me define “insanity” It is doing the same things over and over again and praying that something will change. Logical right? But now go back and look at what you have been doing to generate new business for yourself over the past 12 months.

SO I ASK YOU AGAIN — ARE YOU INSANE?

The only way to survive in any market– acutally succeed !!!!! is to change and adapt.

As an example– If you are a realtor- lender- title attorney and you are ONLY relying on referrals or any other 1 way of getting business than you are in danger of extinction …
Sorry– I didn’t want to be the one to break that news to you but it is important that you know it…

HERE IS A BIG KEY—
I had a consulting client of mine ask me what the top way to generate new buisness is when you are selling a service..??? Great question..
But the thinking is all wrong.. There is no 1 WAY !!!! There are multiple ways and you must often find 20 ways to get 1 client.. instead of thinking of 1 way to get 50 clients.
RE-READ THIS IF IT IS FUZZY..

LET ME GIVE YOU SOME EXAMPLES..
If all you did was blast faxes you would be out of business since they are now against the law without permission.
If all you did was phone calls and telemarketing — same problem with the new DNC list
If all you did was direct mail and the post office went on strike– you would be out of business
If all you did was rely on past clients and the market slows– you are out of business

I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT I WILL SPARE YOU
The one thing for sure in every industry that sells a service is that things will change. The market will change… and you must adapt to it..

You must have MULTIPLE WAYS TO GET NEW BUSINESS AND EACH MUST BE TRACKABLE AND ACCOUNTABLE TO YOU SO YOU KNOW WHAT IS WORKING AND WHAT IS NOT!!!!!

Now get to work– implementing some new creative marketing ways to get new prospects in your business..

A PRAYER and An Opportunity– Hurricane IKE

Every tv station is showing the devastation from Hurricane Ike and I would like to take a moment to send out my own prayers… One of my Platinum Coaching members is right in East Texas and many readers of this blog as well as clients of mine are in the area…

Our thoughts are with them and we should all pray for them to be safe and get on their feet quickly.

NOW FOR THE OPPORTUNITY
There are really 2 opportunities here.
First- Contribute to the relief effort — It is the right thing to do and will make you feel good. I personally believe that when you give… I mean really GIVE without the expectation of getting anything in return. When you do — it comes back to yo u many times over…
So do good because its the right thing to do … and you will see it come around..

Second– This is also an opportunity for you to bring in more business. WHY? HOW?
Well why not for the next week give a % of your profits to a specific charity that helps people like the Red Cross or Salvation Army– there are others…

Go to your local papers and tv and radio and announce it .. Tell all of your prospects and tell all of your past clients.. For one– it is a GREAT reason to contact them and you know that you don’t do that enough …

Next — it is a way to get others to help out and do a good deed. I want to be clear here so there are no misunderstandings…
I AM NOT TELLING YOU TO EXPLOIT THE SITUATION>…
There are scumbags who exploit these situations.. they crawl out from under their rock.. and believe me it will come around to get them too just like it comes around when you do a good deed.

THere is nothing wrong with you doing the right thing AND get some good PR for yoru business.

So go ahead- put your plan together right now and let everyone know..

WHAT I JUST SAW AT DUNKIN DONUTS

One of the things that gets me going each and every morning is a cup of dunkin donuts coffee. It’s the best. But I have an important lesson to share with you so let’s get right to it huh? This morning I went in for my usual cup of coffee and the place was unusually crowded…

I looked around and saw a sign outside that was offering Batlimore County Teachers a free cup of coffee ( 16 oz.) every tuesday of the month. All they had to do was show their id.

NOW AT FIRST LOOK THAT SOUNDS CRAZY RIGHT?
You might ask why they would do such a thing? Won’t they go bankrupt from all the free coffee? There are alot of lessons to learn here so sit tight…

1. The idea of a “loss leader” has been used in retail forever. Lose money on the first sale but gain a customer. How can you do the same thing? How about a free book or special report you create? Or a video? Or any giveaway that relates to what you do and that your prospects will find valuable– How about a Free Review? Free Consultation?

2. They realize that people will probably buy a bagel or muffin or donut with their free coffee. What else can you offer your prospects in terms of additional services that you can generate some extra fees from. If you are a mortgage banker maybe it is a bi -weekly loan .. If you are a realtor maybe it is a warranty or other service connected to owning that home. If you are an insurance agent maybe you make zero on homeowners so you can get a chance to offer them life insurance or other financial services.

3. They are taking prospects and turning them into customers … their coffee is really great and if the only way to get people to try it is to give it away than that’s fine. …
Let’s talk about an example— You are a realtor and I have 143 properties I need to sell to clear up a partnership.. Would you list the first one at ZERO commissioin to you to get full commission on the other 142? What if you are a loan officer.. would you do my first deal for ZERO to get the rest of those deals?

That’s Exactly What Dunkin Donuts Is Doing .. BUT HERE IS THE BIGGER LESSON

They have gone after a targeted group of people with an irresistible offer…
Could you make next week Teacher Appreciation Week and offer them X —-?
Could you make the following week Fireman or Policeman appreciation week…?

Do You Always Use A Hammer?

Just had an experience with one of the “propeller heads” ( my affecionate term for my web geeks)
and I thought I would share it with you becasue there is a BIG Lesson here that you can use to instantly increase your sales..

COULD HAVE ALSO CALLED THIS — YOU ARE NOT YOUR CUSTOMER but I thought the current title created more curiosity.
Before I get to the big lesson– Listen to this one.. Your marketing message can only be acted on if someone reads/opens it. So when you are creating ads, marketing pieces, e-mails etc always keep that in mind. One of the most effective ways to get people to open your letters - e-mails or read your ads is to create curiosity.

Go back and look at some of my other posts and you will see what I mean. Some of them you JUST have to read since they made you so curious. Well- that is not what i wanted to cover here so stay with me and consider that million dollar nugget just a bonus for being a loyal subscriber.

DO YOU ALWAYS USE A HAMMER?
I started by telling you that you are not your customer what I mean is that just because YOU like or dislike something, just because YOU think something is cheap or expensive DOESN’T MEAN YOUR CLIENTS OR PROSPECTS FEEL THE SAME WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

See if you only have a hammer you tend to see every problem or issue as a nail …
Read that one again and let it sink in before you move on..

NOW BACK TO MY PROPELLER HEAD AND HIS STORY…. In one of my on-line businesses we have been having some issues of failed orders. Well anytime I see issues I like to investigate and find out what the source of the problem is. So I asked him WHY ARE SO MANY FAILING?

He didn’t really have a response so I went thru the whole order process with him. Within 2 minutes I realized what the problem was…. Our customers were putting in the address they wanted their systems shipped to but the order was failing because it was a different address than the one tied to their credit card..

When I pointed it out to him he told me that it was obvious to him that you should use the address on your credit card … “EVERYONE KNOWS THAT ”

WRONG !@ !– He is a propeller head– and yes every propeller head knows that … they live on -line every day… Probably never go to a mall or a store too often..

Point here is to always think of things from your customers perspective NOT YOURS !!!! and don’t view every problem as a nail that can only be solved with a hammer.. Get yourself a whole box full of tools.

Do Your Clients Look Like Deer In The Road?

If you have been wondering why you aren’t closing as many prospects as you’d like than pay atttention to this article.. It could give you the reason why your prospects aren’t using you .. The good news is that it is easily fixed.

Most proffessionals like to impress their clients with BIG WORDS. It’s not done to be mean. Most don’t do it to feel superior. The real reason most use BIG WORDS is to make their prospects feel that they know what they are talking about.

DO YOU SPEAK MORTGAGESE, FINANCIALESE, REALTORESE, INSURANCESE, LEGALESE or ANY OTHER “ESE”?
Every profession has its own industry terms that sound very technical but are really just fancy shmancy , maybe even proprietary ways to say things that are really simple.The problem is that most people don’t understand these terms and most proffessionals don’t explain them.

NO ONE WANTS TO FEEL STUPID.. so even if they have no clue what you just said they will appear as if they do.. So how do you tell if they really understand you or not?

Simple– IF THEY LOOK LIKE DEER IN THE STREET, STARING BACK AT YOU WITH THAT BLANK LOOK IN THEIR EYES…than you have totally confused them and as a result, since they don’t want to look or feel stupid, they will leave and say they have to think it over. And as you already know– that is the last you will ever hear or see of them.

ANYONE WHO BUYS ANYTHING WANTS 2 SIMPLE THINGS.. Provide these 2 things and you will never have to worry about closing your prospects on using your services.
1. They want to know that you know what you are doing and are honest and reliable.
2. They want to know they are getting the product that is best for them and that they are getting it at a fair price…

Notice I didn’t say that you needed the cheapest price or that you needed to be the top expert in the country in your field. It’s really simple.. Show them you know what you are talking about ( without using those fancy shmancy terms) and that what you are offering is going to help them and that it is a good value for what it will do for them.

LET’S TIE IT TOGETHER HERE… One of the most effective ways to do this is to use the fancy words BUT then go on to explain it to them in simple terms they can understand. In fact I’m a visual person and so I need to “See” things to understand. When I meet clients I actually take out a blank paper and pen and “draw” it out for them , showing the benefits, payments, savings , answers to their questions and my recommendations.

We walk thru it all together so very few leave with that Deer in the Headlights look.

OH… ONE MORE THING THAT’S IMPORTANT HERE…. Be very careful not to talk “down” to people , and also make sure you are not talking “up” to people. A good salesperson is a Chameleon. They are able to change their presentation based on the needs of each prospect and their ability to understand.

You DON’T want to explain things to the engineer , rocket scientist, or professor the same way you would to the auto mechanic or construction worker who may have only graduated high school or just gotten their GED…

Lastly– I gave you a little secret a few paragraphs ago? Did you catch it? ALRIGHT , here’s a hint.. It is in the Let’s Tie IT Together paragraph and it is a BIG IDEA.. A MULTI MILLION DOLLAR ONE once you apply it to your business…
