The Mindset- Mental Constipation?

Don’t laugh this one off.. it is very serious. I just got back from a seminar in St Louis and had a chance to meet with a few of my consulting clients. This is a serious mental condition and I will explain how to get over it.. it could be what is keeping you from making those dreams come true.

WORSE: IT COULD BE WHAT IS paralyzing you and cauing you to fail.

So let’s first talk about what it is and then I’ll give you some ways to fix it. sort of like a mental x-lax. Sorry if this sounds a bit strange but stay with me.. you’ll be very glad you did.

These clients own a business together and they are really struggling. They are behind on their bills ,both for their business and their personal bills. They are not bringing in enough revenue to keep the lights on and the little bit of revenue they do have is shrinking each and every day.

THE WORSE PART IS THAT THEY ARE … paralyzed. They have no idea what to do. It is affecting their health, their marriages, their financial and emotional lives. The solution was obvious to me. Not because I’m smarter, not because I’m older, not because I’m richer.

They know what to do but can’t see it. WHY?

BECAUSE THEY ARE MENTALLY CONSTIPATED… they are so scared that they are literally mentally frozen. Like paralysis of the brain. Fear has caused them to shut down.

Have you ever had that happen to you? Most of us have. I know I certainly have. The question is not if it will happen to you. The question is how long it will last? That will determine if you succeed or fail.

Personally, when I get into a “funk” or am facing a tough challange I confess that I have a pity party too. But I never ever allow it to last more  than a few days at most. Most of the time just a few hours and then I immediately spring into action !!!!

HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO OVERCOME “MENTAL CONSTIPATION”:

1. GO AWAY- sometime just a change of scenery will help. If you don’t want to go stay over just go for a long drive - Take a pad with you and leave your cell phone or “crack” berry at home. This is a time for just plain thinking with no distractions or interruptions.

2. WRITE IT DOWN. Grab a pen and a pad and just clear your head. Start by writing out the problem. Than write down your physical and mental assets. What do you own? What knowledge do you have? What experiences have you had - both positive and negative.  What relationships do you have that would be helpful? Then look at your problem and your assets and connect the dots.

3. FIND A MENTOR. Sometimes it is just good to share your problem with someone you respect and could possibly help you “fix” it. This was the case with my clients. In about 35 minutes I had reviewed their mental and physical assets with them. I then went on to clarify the problem and provide them with a multi- step plan to “fix” it. Guess that’s why I get the “big Bucks?”

4. Listen to some motivational audios or read some motivational books. Guess it depends on how badly you are clogged up. But this can be very rewarding. Personally I read Think and Grow Rich (www.profitandwealth.com/free) and Psycho- Cybernetics ( you can see it on the resources page above).

5. DO SOMETHING- THIS IS A BIG ONE !!!! Just get started doing something related to solving your problem. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as it is related to your problem. This simple act will often open up the mental floodgates and lead to more actions aimed at getting you where you need to be.

By the way- I would NOT advise you to even do things in any logical progression. The fastest way to success is through MASSIVE ACTION AND IMPLEMENTATION. That idea is actually one of the tactics that triggers The Phenomenon(tm)  www.brian.in12months.com

Wealth Creator #3 Pay Forward

This post is a bit long but stay with me because there is a very important lesson you can profit from here. Both financially and spiritually. OK?

A few days ago I had to go back to the pharmacy to grab some more medicine for my mom ( see the last profit killer post for the details if you missed it.) It was pouring out and a generally gross day. I rushed in at the same time as another guy who had just parked next to me.

We both headed over to the pharmacy window but I went to the other end of the line not realizing that it was the pick up window.. not the drop off window.. DUH !!!!

By the time I realized it several other people jumped behind this guy. Once I saw what was happening I got behind the last person in line and was prepared to wait.

THE GUY IN FRONT SAW WHAT ….just happened and asked me if I wanted to go ahead of him since technically I really was supposed to be the first person in line. Even though I was in a hurry I told him “NO Rush. Go Ahead Thanks” 

The lady right in front of me with her daughter who appeared to be about 15 or 16. She turned around to her daughter and said “He Just paid forward.”

This poor kid had no idea what her mom was talking about. So I took some time while we were all waiting to give her a short explanation.

I EXPLAINED THAT … most people are just focused on themselves and their own issues. This area of town is particularly affluent and the people are pretty arrogant and rude. So what I did really stood out since it rarely happens.

I allowed the other guy to go first even though I was in a hurry and could have justified it. But I paid forward. I allowed a nice thing to happen and realized that somehow it will come back to me. I don’t know how? I don’t know when? I don’t know where?

THIS HAPPENS FOR GOOD AND BAD THINGS YOU DO…

Guess you first need to believe that whatever goes around comes around. GOOD AND BAD. I know it sounds all “foofy” and “new agesish” but It is true. Sort of like my favorite tv show right now which is “Earl”   watch it you’ll understand this whole idea better.

WHICH BRINGS ME TO YOU …. I know this all sounds good but how do you apply it. First you genuinely need to give without EVER expecting anything in return. NO ALTERIOR MOTIVES.

For example - I give to many worthwhile charities and I do so usually anonymously. I have given when I can least afford to. In fact my accountant tells me that I give a disproportinate amount of my income to charity and that it could trigger an IRS audit.

My response was” Who cares. First of all i DID give the money. Second and maybe more importantly I did NOT give it for a tax write off. I did it because I thought it was worthwhile to do.”

LET ME SHARE A FUNNY BUT TRUE STORY .. I love going to Atlantic City and while there I enjoy taking a walk on the boardwalk. It is often like a freak show of preformers and beggers. One night a beggar came up to my wife and I with a sign.

It said that he was deaf and wanted some money. I gave him a dollar and my wife, who is trained in working with deaf and blind people started signing to him. He clearly had no idea what to do so he just turned around and left. 

MY WIFE SCREAMED AT ME AND CALLED ME A … a big sucker. She’s right. He was clearly faking but my feeling has always been if I gave out 10  one dollar bills to 10 different beggars and was right just one time , to a person who really needed it than I was happy.

We walked a little further down the boardwalk and saw a guy on a stretcher , no arms or legs , with a bucket on his stretcher. I asked my wife “think he’s faking too?” To which she just snickered at me and pushed me.. BTW… I gave him a $10.

SO WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN TO YOU?? AND HOW CAN YOU PROFIT FROM IT?

FIRST- Do good deeds and you will be rewarded.. somehow … some where… This is actually one of the PHENOMENON(tm) TRIGGERS ( info at www.brian.in12months.com)

SECOND- You must genuinely care about your prospects and customers or you WILL NOT succeed. One of the reasons I created profit and wealth and give away 2 must have classics and write these posts is so you will be exposed to ideas that work and will profit from them.

If all you are trying to do is make a fast buck you will NOT last long and most likely will not keep that money you do make very long. Look at most industries and fads and you will find people who get in for a quick buck, not to help anyone and not because they even care if what they are selling works or not…

YEAH YEAH @ I KNOW WE ARE ALL capitalists and all that buyer beware stuff. But look around. If you are a Realtor or Loan Officer than you have just seen all the get rich quick people leave and all the serious career minded people who do care stick around.

Start paying forward with charity and information. BIG IDEA- make all of your marketing pieces useful and helpful not just sales pitches. Make your inperson or phone appointments all about helping your customers and giving good , useful, information and you will quickly see your profits jump.

YOU CAN”T FAKE IT ! most people have great BS detectors. Be real. BE Genuine. ReallY Care and make sure that you are paying forward.

The mayor of a small town once wrote to Benjamin Franklin asking for a donation so the town could buy a bell for its town square. Franklin sent money with a note suggesting they forego the bell in favor of buying books for the town library.  It is at the library we might find an answer to why so few succeed and why most fail – at anything, at everything.

 

Most people do not apply themselves to acquiring know-how nor apply the know-how they acquire. In short, they have the attention span of a gnat, the diligence of an idle, random breeze. They certainly don’t study.

 

 

I have become quite rich and somewhat celebrated, reaching the pinnacle of success in not one but three different fields. At each required skill-set, I once sucked. For me, there has always been a crawl to competence, then a fast rise to superiority. Part of the process is getting through of a lot of information in a hurry but also continuously. For nearly 25 years,  I read a book a day plus newspapers, trade journals, newsletters, visited the public library weekly; took on a needed skill and so thoroughly and intensely studied it as to become a world class expert. When I was teaching myself to be an advertising copywriter, for example, I studied no less than an hour everyday, listened to recorded material on the subject constantly, sought out and got to know the top people in the field, and when one told me to take great direct-response ads and write them out longhand 21 times each, to teach my subconscious the rhythm  of such writing, I did that with 100 ads. I collected over 200 books on the subject and immersed myself in them. I built organized files of samples that fill a room. I traced one master back to his teachers, they to theirs, thus even knowing the genealogy of the field.  When I am asked by fledgling or journeymen copywriters how they, too, might have clients waiting in line to pay them $100,000.00 fees when there are thousands of copywriters advertising their availability for  1/10th that or less, and I tell them this answer, they reject it.  They seek rewards out of kilter with their value and are unwilling to do what is necessary to build up their value.

 

The same answer could be given by the top earners in insurance, real estate, retail store ownership, dentistry – name the business or profession. The answer is the same.

 

I am told by people all the time that they simply do not have time to read and listen to all the material they have purchased or subscribed to. But time is democratic and just. Everyone has the same amount. When I choose to read with my mid-morning coffee break and you choose to blather about trivia with friends; when I choose to study for an hour sitting on my backyard deck at day’s end but you choose to watch a TIVO’d American Idol episode, we reveal much. When someone says he does not have the time to apply himself to acquiring the know-how required to create sufficient value for his stated desires, he is a farmer surrounded by ripe fruit and vegetables, whole grains and a herd of cattle on his own property who dies of starvation, unable to organize his time and discipline himself to eat.

 

Incidentally, success in every business, including yours, depends on mastery of a handful of critical competencies (one of which is always marketing).  The individual who sets out earnestly and diligently to acquire a wealth of know-how in each winds up with wealth in his bank account.  All others watch with envy and cry in their soup, two activities they do seem to find time for.
